  1. Click on “Start” button.
  2. Click on “Run” and type “regedit” in the command box. This will open a registry editor
  3. Select the “Registry” menu and click on “Export registry file”
  4. Click on “all” in the export registry range.
  5. Select the folder to save your registry information. It is better to save the file on the Windows desktop or My Computer.
  6. Click on “Save”.

The backup of the registry is needed so that you can have an access to the old registry information when needed. The registry information once modified cannot be brought back. That is why you should always keep a backup copy.

Like backup and restore operation of Windows registry, there are many other system operations that are also important. Let’s first study, how to keep a backup of the windows registry. This can be done by following these steps.

  1. Start the computer in ‘safe mode’
  2. Click and open the registry backup file. And, the old information of the registry will be merged into the registry

  2. Click on “System Tools” and then select “System Restore”. This will list all the restore points
  3. Choose a restore point and click on “OK”

For creating a restore point on your computer system, you have to follow these steps.

  1. In the “System Restore”, click on “Create a restore point”
  2. Enter the name for the restore point and click on “Create” button. This will create a restore point in the computer. So, whenever you need to restore Windows registry, you have to hit the “System Restore”.

The backup and restore of Windows registry has to be done as the need arises. But more importantly, you should check the registry very often for the corrupt files. The system runs slow, if there are corrupt files in the registry. So in order to increase the performance of the computer system, you have to repair these corrupt files by running successful registry repair software. The repair software scans the registry and displays a list of all the corrupt files in the registry. Some software allows you to repair but most of them repair by themselves. If the software does not repair the files automatically, then you may take the help of the Windows installation CD or DVD.
