Show Hidden Devices In Windows
The Device Manager displays normally only the plug and play devices that are currently installed. A USB device, e.g. that is extracted for now does not appear at all. In Windows XP there is a choice in the View menu labeled "Show hidden devices", but when activated, will also display the installed drivers that are not plug and play, but not plug and play devices that are not connected.
Such a view, however, is useful to be able to uninstall the drivers that are no longer used and needed. It can be arranged. Open System Properties (the "Advanced system settings" in Vista) and go to the Advanced tab. Click on the button Environment Variables and add a new system variable in the lower field. The variable name must be
devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
with value 1. Then these units with gray shading in Device Manager, but still, only if the "Show hidden devices" is checked.
In order to achieve this view but to make it permanent there is another method. Open a command window and type
set devmgr_show_ nonpresent_devices = 1 devmgmt.msc
Device Manager opens with the appearance of "ghosts called" activated. Once the command window closes reset variable and Device behaves as usual the next time it starts.
