Change Background On The Welcome Screen
Welcome, the page where you log into Windows Vista, is not the world's funniest. Not that you spend so much time at it, but it might be fun to make it a little more personal anyway. In earlier Windows versions, it was not so difficult to arrange, but in Vista it is a bit awkward.
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder \ Windows \ system32. Right-click the file Imageres.dll, select Properties and go to the Security tab. Click the Advanced button, go to Owner tab and click the Edit button. Accept any question from the user control. Select Administrators from the list and then close all windows with OK.
Repeat - right-click the file Imageres.dll, select Properties and go to the Security tab. Click the Edit button, and accept any terms from the user control. Select Administrators from the list and tick the "Full Control" column. Close all windows with OK and Yes.
Now you have taken over the ownership of the file. Make two copies of it in the same folder and call them Imageres-ny.dll and Imageres-gammal.dll.
Then, Xn Resource Editor, a free utility is available here:
www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d10resourceeditor.htm.
You must then start the program as an administrator by right clicking the start icon and select "Run as administrator".
Select Options in the View menu. The scroll bar "Choose which parser to use ¿" select "Xn Resource Editor internal resource parser". Click OK, then select Open in the File menu. Browse file Imageres-new. Dll file and open it.
To the left is now a tree structure that you can use to navigate in the various graphic resources and interface elements contained in the dll. Expand IMAGE-branch, and then open one of the numbered folders that are there. Each folder contains graphics that represent a screen size / resolution. When the content is visible dimensions of the gray box. Select the corresponding your current resolution. You have to click your way through several to find the right.
You can edit the image directly in the program, but what you probably want to do is replace it. You may use any picture you want, only it has exactly the right dimensions. One of the big picture must be reduced or cropped in an image first. A little fill usefully with a black border around. When the image is complete, copy it from the image treated with Ctrl + C. Then return to Xn Resource Editor, and paste with Ctrl + V. Save and close the program.
Now, the original Imageres.dll replaced with the one you modified. Windows allows you to not do it, because it is used. To get around this, restart Windows and press F8 to get to the boot menu. Select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt". When the Dos window opens, type:
copy imageres-ny.dll imageres.dll
Accept that the file is overwritten. Once everything is set, press Ctrl + Alt + Del, click on the arrow next to the red button to the right and select "Restart". When Windows starts, your welcome screen look different.
If you want to restore the original, repeat the maneuver that took you to the command prompt in safe mode and write
copy imageres-gammal.dll imageres.dll
